The honest beauty column
Penneys has launched its new Fairtrade skincare collection. And the beauty drop got me thinking about what other brands are championing their workers’ rights, demanding safer conditions and fairer pay. So if you want to make a purchase that will make a difference, here’s how.
.
Primark Balm To Oil Cleanser, €4.50 THE high-street mecca’s six-piece collection of Fairtrade-certified beauty staples has landed, and I am low-key obsessed. Made using Fairtrade shea butter and olive oil, my personal favourite is the balm to oil cleanser. Pop it onto damp skin to remove makeup and then massage gently before removing it with water or a cleansing cloth. Squeaky clean.
.
L’Occitane Shea Butter Hand Cream, €10.50 CAN I get a high five for this miracle-working hand cream? With one sold every four seconds worldwide, this cult handbag saviour is a must-buy. Made with 20pc concentrated shea butter, your digits will be supple and hydrated regardless of the weather. As well as its covetable skincare staples, L’Occitane is a brand that is always giving back. So it’s no surprise the French company has been working with women’s cooperatives in Burkina Faso since the 1980s, and more recently in Ghana, to improve the lives and working conditions of women there by building long-term partnerships.
.
Weleda Skin Food Body Butter, €23.99 THE OG body moisturiser, this is your sign to add Weleda’s body butter to your skincare regime now. Packed with botanical extracts including soothing calendula and chamomile, and organic shea and cocoa butter for petal-soft skin, this fast-absorbing cream is a non-greasy hydrating heavy-hitter. As a bonus, you’ll smell like lingering sweet orange and aromatic lavender too. With a ‘do-good, feel-good, look-good world journey from seed to blossom’ ethos, why wouldn’t you get involved with this brand?
.
Primark Olive Bath Oil, €5 UPGRADE your next bath time with this heavenly elixir. The perfect addition to any lazy girl beauty routine, add a few drops to your tub and it’ll moisturise your skin as you soak. Because it’s all about aesthetics, you’ll also fall in love with the packaging. You best believe this bottle will be front and centre on my bath rack.
.
Dr Bronner’s All-One Pure-Castile Bar Soap, €6.95 THIS family business is dedicated to treating the earth, its employees, and suppliers fairly. Certified organic and vegan, you’re going to get your money’s worth from this multi-purpose soap in scents including peppermint and tea tree. From your mane to your mutt, the versatile bar can be used for everything from hand washing to dish washing, so get scrubbing.
.
Trilogy Certified Organic Rosehip Oil, €39.45 THIS lightweight oil really packs a punch. Clinically tested, it is shown to help minimise the appearance of wrinkles, scars and stretch marks, while rejuvenating the skin in just three little drops. What’s more, the wild-harvested oil is completely traceable and guaranteed GMO-free.
.
The Body Shop Shea Shower Cream, €7 MADE with 91pc natural ingredients including handcrafted shea butter from Ghana, in a 100pc recycled plastic bottle, lather up because you’re in for a treat. This hard-working shower cream will leave your skin feeling soft, cleansed and hydrated from top-to-toe. Plus, you’ll be supporting a brand that has its own Community Fair Trade programme.
